Response to the earthquake in Kumamoto, Japan

Nature Positive Initiative and IUCN-Japan respond to the earthquake

The Nature Positive Initiative and the IUCN Japan Committee share a statement following the 7.1 magnitude earthquake that hit the Kumamoto region on Tuesday at 4:27 p.m. local time.
We are deeply saddened to learn of the powerful earthquake that has affected Kumamoto.
Just days ago, Kumamoto welcomed the global nature community with extraordinary warmth and hospitality during the Global Nature Positive Summit 2026. Today, our thoughts are with the people of Kumamoto and all those affected by this disaster. We sincerely hope for the safety of everyone impacted, extend our heartfelt sympathies to those who have suffered loss or damage, and express our deepest respect to the emergency responders and all those working to protect lives and support affected communities.
We stand in solidarity with the people of Kumamoto and hope for a safe and swift recovery.
