Nature Positive at the UNFCCC COP

Nature and climate are two sides of the same coin. At the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change Conference of Parties (UNFCCC COP), nature has risen up the agenda as an ally to tackle the climate crisis.

Addressing the climate crisis and reversing nature loss are two sides of the same coin. A stable climate depends on thriving ecosystems – forests, oceans, wetlands, and grasslands that absorb and store carbon, regulate weather patterns, and support food and water security. At the same time, healthy ecosystems cannot survive in a world where temperatures continue to rise.

Focusing on net-zero emissions alone is not enough. Without halting and reversing the loss of nature, we risk crossing ecological tipping points that undermine climate progress and threaten the very systems that sustain life.

Nature Positive has featured frequently at the UNFCCC’s COPs with nature pavilions providing space for discussions around nature-based solutions, the role of nature in tackling the climate crisis and the importance of nature for people and climate.

King Charles noted the importance of moving both to a net-zero emissions and nature-positive world in his speech at COP28 in Dubai, in 2023.

As we work towards a zero carbon future, we must work equally towards being nature positive.

The Nature Positive Initiative will continue its work through upcoming UNFCCC COPs, to ensure nature-positive is considered and referenced alongside efforts towards net-zero emissions.

UNFCCC COP30, Belém - Brazil, 2025

The UNFCCC COP30 in Belém, Brazil, will be a defining moment for aligning global action on climate and nature. As countries take stock of progress toward the Paris Agreement, it is essential that nature is recognized not only as a victim of climate change but also as a powerful ally in addressing it.

The Nature Positive Initiative is attending COP30 to ensure that nature is at the heart of climate decisions.

UNFCCC COP29, Baku - Azerbaijan, 2024

“This is no time for victory laps. We need to set our sights and redouble our efforts on the road to Belém,” – UN Climate Change Executive Secretary Simon Stiell

Nature and climate are inextricably linked. Nature is a crucial element in our fight against the climate crisis. As well as developments on finance, the COP29 saw advancements in mitigation and adaptation strategies.
