The Nature Positive Initiative is proactive in working with the United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity Secretariat to ensure all countries who adopted the Biodiversity Plan maintain the ambition they pledged – to halt and reverse nature loss by 2030.
In previous years, Nature Positive was backed by many international conservation and environmental organisations to ensure that the world kept sight of what’s needed to tackle the nature crisis. Now, as countries pivot to deliver on their commitments made in the Biodiversity Plan, there remains a role for the Nature Positive Initiative and all members to keep up the pressure on ambitious implementation of the plan and support a more sustainable future.
The 16th meeting of the Conference of the Parties (COP16) to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) took place October 2024, in Cali, Colombia. This was the first COP since the adoption of the historic agreement adopted in Montreal and was an important indicator of the level of commitment worldwide. Countries were required to submit their National Biodiversity Strategies and Action Plans (NBSAPs) and negotiations on resource mobilization and the monitoring framework and role of Indigenous Peoples and local communities in protecting biodiversity.
The Nature Positive Initiative will coordinate a large Nature Positive Pavilion inside the main conference centre over the two weeks of COP16, with participation from all partners.
