Strengthening human rights and safeguards for nature-based solutions
Social and environmental safeguards frameworks and human rights-based approaches are complementary and mutually reinforcing, and applying both supports the adoption and scale-up of nature-based solutions (NbS). However, existing safeguards frameworks generally lack mechanisms for transparent, equitable benefit-sharing and for the effective inclusion and participation of Indigenous Peoples and local communities. In this interactive panel, we discuss how safeguards are linked to a human rights-based approach, what is needed to develop credible and actionable safeguards, and how they relate to the CBD Ecosystem-based Adaptation Voluntary Guidelines and the Paris Agreement Crediting Mechanism.
