Code Red for the Tapanuli Orangutan: A species on the brink of extinction without a recovery plan.

Location: Small Room

Organizers: Mighty Earth

Mighty Earth and partners are launching a new report outlining the steps that need to be taken to save the Tapanuli orangutan, the world’s rarest, great ape from extinction.

The Tapanuli Orangutan is the most recently discovered great ape species and the closest to extinction in the wild. With an estimated 658 left in the one place they call home, the Batang Toru ecosystem in north Sumatra, this is a species on the edge without a recovery plan. Mighty Earth is bringing together some of the world’s leading conservationists to map a route forward for the Tapanuli orangutan, in line with the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, Target 4, which calls for “urgent management actions to halt human induced extinction of known threatened species and for the recovery and conservation of species.”
