Making OECMs Deliver: Local Stewardship, National Standards, Nature Positive Outcomes
OECMs are a core strategy for delivering Target 3 — but durable, nature positive outcomes depend on anchoring national recognition of OECMs in inclusive, locally grounded governance. In Kenya’s Laikipia-Isiolo-Samburu landscape, a multi-stakeholder dialogue examines how recognizing OECMs outside protected areas can strengthen ecological connectivity and reduce resource-based conflict in this strategically vital region. In Antananarivo, a parallel process asks how OECMs can recognize and support community-based conservation efforts already underway across Madagascar’s landscapes. Speakers from governments, communities and technical partners will share how these national OECM processes are tackling the questions that arise in strengthening community rights and local benefits while meeting rigorous national verification standards.
