Belém, Brazil, 10 November 2025: The world’s first book about Nature Positive has been released at the COP30 climate conference in a new Portuguese translation, published by Editora Jandaíra and the Arapyaú Institute, with additional chapters by leading Brazilian experts. The book includes a foreword by Lélia Wanick Salgado and photographs by Sebastião Salgado.
Originally published by Routledge Earthscan in June 2025 and written by a diverse group of global nature leaders, the book Becoming Nature Positive: Transitioning to a Safe and Just Future provides a snapshot of how the Nature Positive global goal came to be, why it matters, and what it will take to achieve it across business, finance, governance and society.
The new edition in Portuguese language, entitled A Era da Natureza, or ‘The Nature Epoque’, is augmented with additional contributions written by Brazilian experts and thought leaders across sectors:
Nature Positive is a global societal goal to halt and reverse nature loss by 2030 with continued recovery to 2050, agreed by all countries in the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework at the UN Convention on Biological Diversity’s COP15 conference in 2022. The goal means ensuring there is more nature in the world tomorrow than today, for the benefit of all. But challenges remain – from finance and measurement to multilateral ambition and cooperation.
Roberto Waack, Chair of the Arapyaú Institute, said:
“The book is essential reading at a time when humanity stands at an existential crossroads. Consolidating nature as vital infrastructure for human well-being is the path toward transforming it into a true asset class. We must understand that natural capital will only achieve scale once we stop treating it as a moral exception and start recognizing it as the foundation of our economic systems.”
Izabella Teixeira, Former Minister of the Environment and Arapyaú Fellow, said:
“Nature must be seen as a political force in a world undergoing transformation – a strategic ally in the struggles for security, development and the future. Recognizing its presence and its rhythms is essential to redefining power relations and building new forms of cooperation and prosperity.”
Vanda Witoto, Indigenous leader and Arapyaú Fellow, said:
“We, Indigenous peoples, are intrinsically interdependent with nature. We recognize the Earth as our mother, the forest as our sister, and the river as our grandfather. For us, a nature-positive future means recognizing the wholeness of all forms of life, as every being that inhabits nature has a spirit and a right to exist. Humanity must regenerate its thoughts and attitudes to understand this sacred relationship, which is essential for the continuity of life on Earth.”
Marco Lambertini, Convener of the Nature Positive Initiative, said:
“I am excited to see the publication of this special Brazilian edition of Becoming Nature Positive. A safe and just people-positive future depends on a nature-positive one. Brazil’s immense natural heritage, natural capital and biodiversity play a crucial role in supporting local, regional and global ecological and climate stability which, in turn, is crucial to our wellbeing, prosperity and equity. This, coupled with Brazil’s deep and ancestral relationship with nature, puts the country in a pivotal role to drive the “Great Transition” to a nature-and-people positive future. This Brazilian edition of Becoming Nature Positive is enriched by inspiring and thought-provoking additional contributions from Brazilian thought leaders, to whom I am deeply grateful. Launching the book during COP30 in Belém is of key significance given the indivisible nature-climate nexus and the fact that nature is fundamental to our ability to tackle the climate crisis.”
As humanity sits at an existential crossroads, Becoming Nature Positive: Transitioning to a Safe and Just Future articulates why a nature-positive future is the only way to secure the functioning and stability of Earth systems essential to the survival and wellbeing of present and future human generations – as well as the rest of Earth’s amazing diversity of life.
