TNFD, SBTN and GRI take key step towards embedding state of nature metrics

A critical development on the path to operationalizing the state of nature metrics from Nature Positive Initiative members

Nature Positive Initiative’s core partners theTaskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures (TNFD), Science-Based Targets Network (SBTN) and Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) have launched a consultation today on how to embed the aligned state of nature metrics within their frameworks.

This is a critical development on the path to operationalizing the state of nature metrics, making them available for use by businesses and financial institutions, and demonstrates:

ACTION

  • Once finalized, these metrics will enable companies to assess whether their environmental strategies and initiatives are resulting in the intended outcomes for nature. Over 600 metrics exist for this assessment, leading to confusion and inertia on what to measure. Embedding a minimum, aligned set in frameworks and standards will address this, and help unlock effective nature-positive action and informed decision-making by companies, financial institutions and other stakeholders.

CONSISTENCY

  • This collaborative approach by TNFD, GRI and SBTN helps deliver the ultimate goal of the Nature Positive Initiative’s state of nature metrics work to drive consistency across existing frameworks and standards. Using the same core set of metrics measured in an aligned way helps streamline measurement by companies, so that more efforts can be focused on driving action.

PACE

  • These three global standard-setting organizations are moving at pace to embed the metrics, recognizing the urgent need for ambitious action to halt and reverse nature loss. For example, TNFD is looking to finalize its core global disclosure metrics and LEAP guidance by later this year. This is an important step forward for helping companies contribute to the upcoming 2030 Global Biodiversity Framework targets and the Global Goal for Nature.

What is the consultation from TNFD, SBTN and GRI about?

The consultation launched today builds on this to look at how these metrics can best be embedded within TNFD, GRI and SBTN’s guidance to support key use cases: nature impact assessment, target-setting, transition planning and disclosures. The Nature Positive Initiative’s final public consultation, which ran from 11 February – 24 March 2026, focused on the metrics and how to measure them. The feedback is now being analysed and incorporated, and will also help inform TNFD, GRI and SBTN’s decision-making.What can you do to help?

Respond to the consultation by 4 June to indicate your support for embedding an aligned core set of state of nature metrics across key frameworks and standards. Please also share your thoughts on any further guidance or support needed to ensure companies can apply the metrics effectively in their different key use cases.
